On 23 October the sun enters the ‘witchy’ sign of Scorpio. There’s a number of festivals that honour the dead at this time including Samhain, Halloween, All Saints day, All Souls day, and the Mexican Day of the Dead. Fittingly the Major Arcana card ruled by Scorpio is Death.

Many people believe that the veil between the living and the spirit world is at its thinnest at this time, making it easier to communicate with ancestors and other spirits. So I’ve created two spreads that help you connect with your ancestors. I’ve tested them out on myself, and I’m pleased with the results. I’d love to hear your feedback.
Connecting with loved ones
When an important person in your life dies, the relationship with them still continues, but in a different form. It is very common for people both during and after the grieving process to talk to loved ones who have ascended into spirit. And we will continue to have a relationship with our deceased loved ones within our mind and our emotions too.
I make no claims to be a medium, but I know from my personal experience that you can easily
contact deceased friends and family. This may be useful if you have unfinished business with them, such as unresolved anger, or if you are worried about them or you just want a comforting chat. If you feel uncomfortable about doing this yourself then use a reputable medium.
Many of us have deceased loved ones around us to support us in addition to Angels and Ascended Masters. They can include relatives who passed before your birth, people with whom you share a close bond, or those from your past who can teach you a special skill that you require now.
After people die they have the option of performing service work to enhance their own spiritual progress and to help others. Some volunteer and train to become guides to the living. There is a belief that if you have been named after a deceased relative then they often function as your spirit guide and that is true in my own life.
There are warnings from the bible about speaking to the dead and using mediums. I agree that is a mistake to turn our lives over to those who have passed on just as it isn't right to give control of our lives to those who are living. We want our higher selves in conjunction with God to be in charge, but we should have always have the final say.
But deceased loved ones can help us, just treat their advice with the same scepticism you would if they were talking to you in real life.
If you have conflicted feelings or unresolved issues with someone who is dead then have a heart-to-heart with them about your unresolved anger, fear, guilt or worry. You can do this by writing a letter to the person who passed away, or by thinking the thoughts you want to convey or by talking to them.
We are all sensitive to energies and intuitively translate those energies into meaningful knowledge. So if you feel your grandmother around you trust the feeling. Your body knows what energy surrounds you, and it delivers this information into your mind. If your mind is open and receptive you can receive what it is they want to communicate to you. Trust what you receive. And then ask if the information is loving and helpful. If it isn’t, don’t listen to them.
After my wife and my mother died, I used to talk and listen to them during a long car journey I regularly made. It eased my grief and helped me deal with a number of issues much better than I would have otherwise done. I don't work with my deceased loved ones much now, although I still talk to my mum.
Tarot reading
One way to connect with your ancestors is through a Tarot reading. Communicating with ancestral spirits is a sacred act that can bring guidance, closure, and a deeper understanding of your roots.
When using tarot to connect with ancestors:
· Have a clear intention and request permission for the connection.
· Create a sacred space – photos of ancestors, heirlooms, lighting a candle all help.
· Shuffle the deck while focusing on your ancestors and the intention to connect with them.
· Lay out the cards then interpret them based on the questions of the spread.
· Use the cards to form a narrative, allowing them to bring through lessons, messages, and experiences passed down through the generations.
Ancestral connection Tarot spread
This is a simple Tarot spread to help you connect with your ancestors.
Card 1. What do my ancestors want me to know?
This card reveals the message your ancestors are trying to communicate to you.
Card 2. How can I honour my ancestors?
This card shows how you can honour your ancestors. It could involve a specific action, ritual, or offering. However, a common message from mediumship readings is that life is a gift, so enjoy each moment of it. How can you do that and honour the gift of life your ancestors gave you?
Card 3. What wisdom can I carry forward?
Samhain is the beginning of the Celtic New Year. This card reflects the guidance your ancestors offer as you move forward into the next part of your journey.
Card 4. Is there any family karma I need to heal or transform?
This card is about understanding and healing the less helpful energies passed on through your family traditions, inherited genetic and behaviour patterns, learnt dysfunctional patterns and inherited emotions.
